End of The Road

So our Media Studies class is coming to an end. I cant believe I'm actually going to say this but I actually enjoyed this class (on the days I came). We learned many important things about the media that I'm sure I will use in the future. Like to be careful what I put on the internet because we never know who is looking at it, and to make sure I censor the things I do put on. I also learned that the media is a huge impact on our lives. Like I already knew that I just didn't realize how much it actually impacts us. This class showed me that I don't want technology to take me over and I want to have my own thoughts on things not just go by what the media has to say. I want to think what I want to think not what the media tells me to believe.
For the most part I have really enjoyed this class and I'm glad I took it and I couldn't have asked for a better teacher !

Water Balloon Fight

So at SRHS we have a tradition of having a water balloon fight on the last day of classes ! We all get about 200-300 water balloons each and head out and completely destroy one another. It is a great time but recently we have been having to have it in the park which I think isn't fair. It was way more fun when we used to have it in the parking lot and honestly I think it is more safe. All of those empty balloons are just going to be sitting in the park waiting for a dog to come by and eat one and choke on it ! It would be way more reasonable to have the balloon fight in the parking lot if you ask me ! The other grades ruined it for our grades and now we are all being punished for their mistakes.

No Time

Now that my high school career is almost over I feel like I haven't lived it to the fullest and it saddens me.. a couple things I wish I would have done more:

1. Worked harder in class: This would have been a big one. I know I can do it if I put my mind to it I just have trouble being motivated to do it.

2. Get more involved: I wish I would have participated more in school activities then I did or joined different groups.

3. Join more sports teams: I played on the Softball team all through high school but I really should have tried out for Hockey and I would have also liked to have played Rugby or Field Hockey

4. Be in one of the schools theater productions: I would have loved to been a part of this but I haven't really ever done anything like it

5.Not jigged as much: I now realize how little time we spend in school and how fast it goes by and I wish I never just threw it all away

6. Got to know more people: I would say I know a majority of the people, but I tend to stick to just my one click and I wish I would have had an open mind to other peoples clicks

I'm sure there are plenty more things I wish I could redo but the truth is there is no time left so I'm just left here wishing.

Censorship

Okay this is a big issue if you ask me. People need to learn what to put on Facebook and what not to put on. Some of the things I see on Facebook are just completely inappropriate when it comes to being in public. I feel embarrassed for a lot of the people that put ridiculous photos or messages all of Facebook. We don't want to see you and your boyfriend making out, and we really don't need to see your cleavage girl, put it away ! Sometimes I'll be scrolling down my newsfeed and see more cleavage then I would if I walked into a strip club !
Another issue is the swearing and inappropriate language that is all over Facebook for everyone to see.. like do you not have family on your friends list? Many of the things I see on Twitter I'm sure they wouldn't want their family seeing so why put it on. Also I'm always thinking to myself, do you not feel awkward, or do you not feel bad about this? All I know is that people need to learn to censor their media.. please..

The Way People Interact

It seems that ever since we have all got in over our heads with social media it is changing the way people interact. Before our time people used to have to go up to people and talk to them face to face, then it turned into phone calls(which was still bad, but not as bad) nowadays we all just text to have a conversation. It makes our generation feel tough through text but when it comes to face to face we are all cowards. A lot of people have a hard time with looking people in the eyes while they are talking to them and I feel that is a huge part of the way we communicate now because we aren't used to talking face to face as much as over text. And we all tend to sit there and text one another when were right beside each other or write to each other on twitter and such.
Another thought is the words people use now that they get off of the television, such as quotes famous people say that people think are funny so it catches on in everyday lingo. We don't sound as intelligent as we could all due to the fact of what we hear on tv that makes us repeat it.  My personal opinion is we all sound like idiots, but that's but me.

Life After This?

So is it bad that I still have no idea what I'm going to do with my life after high school. I've never really given it much thought and now the time is almost here and I'm going to end up rushing into something that I'm not interested in.. I don't want to go off to school and waste a bunch of money on something I know I'm not going to want to do for the rest of my life but on the other hand I don't want to take a year off and sit around here while all of my friends are off at University or Collage. I should have just accepted my offer to Toronto and went there but I didn't want to go alone and now I'm afraid its to late.. at least there I would have been doing something I know that I'm interested in. Ughh life is so hard and I haven't even go out of school yet ! I never thought I would say this but I wish I could just stay in high school forever!

Social Networking and Privacy

I used to think that what we put on the internet was private but as I recently found out anything can be found. No matter what the privacy setting is on a network there is probably always a way for people to see your stuff. On Facebook you can make it so only your friends can see your profile but as I recently found out in class that the adds that you see on you Facebook page pop up because of what "interests" you which is kinda freaky. If you change your relationship status to in a relationship your adds are now about marriage, but if you change your relationship status to married your adds are now about divorce ! Kinda funny when you think about it ! Also on twitter anyone can search you up which is freaky. Same thing as on Instagram, anyone can see your pictures if they search the right thing. All I'm saying is these social networks don't seem to have as big as privacy policy as we think they do.

Ask.fm

In class we had to make rants about a social problem that has been occurring and me and my partner decided to do ours on the social networking site Ask.fm. For anyone who doesn't know, Ask.fm is a site that allows you to ask people questions without them knowing that it is you.
I recently checked out the site and saw all of the rude and just down right terrible things that people say to each other on that site and I Just don't understand the reasoning as to why you would want to be on a site like that that someone can just tell you off and you not know who it is. People get told to kill their selves and everything else on that site and it leads to deaths and people harming themselves  so please answer this question for me.. why would you go on the site !?

Movie Making

This week in Media Studies we have been producing a movie. Our movie is about people that turn into zombies by recieving text messages. We have a great script and a lot of help, but the process of making the film is a lot more complex then we would have thought. It is taking a lot more time consumption then we thought. Also not everything is going exactly as planned. People have been not showing up to class which makes it harder to get the movie done, and some of the rooms that we decided to shoot our film in are being used so we dont always get to use the rooms we want to which makes it very frusterating on everyone.
I never would have thought that it would take so much work to make a little short clip. It didn't seem like it would be so hard at the time but everyone is getting so stressed out over it because nothing is going as planned. Now I see why actresses always turn to drugs.

Kids Shows

Has anyone noticed the selection of shows on the television lately? Not to many to pick from and the ones that there are franqly arent that good. I can't even stand to watch the tv anymore due to the little selection. I hook up my netflix and watch that or pop in a movie.
I remember when I was a kid there were soo many shows to pick from and all of them were awesome ! Like what ever happened to The Proud Family, and shows like that ! Poor kids now adays. You should see the shows my little brother has to grow up too.. not good, poor kid. I feel bad for the generations that missed out on Scooby-Doo, Recess. The Weekenders, and all of the other great shows we grew up too.
I tried to sit down and watch tv with my little brother and I cant even stand to. The shows are soo stupid ! Someones gotta come up with some more new shows or put the oldies back on ( id go with the oldies). But thats just my opinion :)

Our Role

Our role as televison consumers is not to believe everything we see one tv. The televison shows many different things, and not all are true. It is our role not to believe it all. Many people believe that what they see or hear over the media must be true sense it was broadcasted, but thats not true, ever heard of a rumor? Ya, thats exactly what a lot of it is.
Not only are we not suppose to beleieve everything we see, but we shouldn`t believe the reality of the televison. Like the way the tv is portrayed and the way the actors are portrayed, as perfect. Thats not the way life is and never will be. You have your ups and downs.
Another one of our roles is to analyze what we see, and to beleieve our own beleiefs whats what we think is true about what we have watched or heard. Follow your heart, not the media.

Acceptance

For the most part the televison puts out a dream realtiy in which we all think is real, and most of the time it isn`t. They try to portray MOST actors as beautiful without a flaw, we all know this can not be true. The televison trys to show us how they think the world should be like, but the truth is, is that it will never be like that. I accept that the actors we see on tv are extremely beautiful without a flaw and my life wont ever be that way.
The televison shows us how life should be, such as sexest comercials showing girls cooking diner, not the boys. In some cases this might be the way, but not always, there are very many males that cook as well. As well was sporting comercials and the actor always being a male. This is not reality.
The televison trys to show us that life is easy, but it isn`t. No one grieves on televison like we do in reality. Its just not the way things happen in the real world.

Disney Mold

This week in class we read an article called "Too Few Animated Women Break the Disney Mold". This article overview talked about how Disney uses its cartoon characters to be sexest or racist. They portray the females as a "typical" women, worrying about her hair, or her clothes, or being the jealous type. The women in the cartoons are featured as either old or attractive but never both. There has never been an unattractive heroine that I can recall, they are always attractive.

I never really payed close attention to this in cartoons before, but now that we read this article it draws my attention. When you look back on all the clasic cartoons all of the female character are attractice, fretful, jealous, or worried about how they look. It doesn't seem very fair if you ask me. Women shouldn't have to be portrayed in a certian way.

The article mentions that the film makers have tried to fix this over the past few years by changing the colour of they cartoons to a colour other then black white or brown to avoid racism. Although they have done this it just seems like a way to avoid the problem. I don't think cartoon characters will ever not be portrayed a certain way, not saying that it is right, I just dont think it will change.

Grad 2013

So this is it? This is the year we have been building up to our whole school careers? I always thought it would be more then this, maybe more fun, or exciting. And now we are suppose to know exactly what we want to do with the rest of our lives ? Well what if we don't know.. what are we suppose to do then? And when we graduate it's just over, high school is over, thats kinda a big deal and we are suppose to be alright with that? Well I dont know if I can be. And we just have one ceremony and get a single piece of paper and thats all we have to remember our school career, a single piece of paper?  School has been way more important then to just have a piece of paper to remember it bye. Not being able to see all the friends I have grown up with and gotten so close with over the past thirteen years will be so difficult. Everything will be so different.

The Bronswik Affair

This week we watched a videoin class that was a mocumentary about a television that supposably tricked your brain into thinking you needed abnormaly large amounts of a product at once. I never clued in that the video we were watching could be fake because I've never questioned what I see on tv before (which I should probably start doing) so I completely believed the story.

Now that I see how easily the media can be telling false stories I am going to have to look deeper into the story and not always believe what I see. The media makes it almost impossible to even know when not to believe it because everything seems so real ! How am I ever suppose to know !? Well they could have fooled me..

Citizen Kane

If some of you are unaware of the movie "Citizen Cane" it was driected by Orson Welles. It was about a very rich man named Charles Foster Kane's who was unhappy with his life although he could have anything he wanted all he really wanted was his childhood back. He couldn't find love or keep a wife and lived miserably even though he was very successfull.

What I enjoyed about the story was the message that it portrayed, that money doesn't buy happiness. You can buy all the fancy things in the world but you cant buy love or friendship and this movie showed that exactly. Citizen Kane spent loads of money on fancy things, but was miserable because he had no true friends or no love in his life. At some points in the movie you can't help but feel sorry for him ,although he was a huge jerk, everyone deserves love and friendships.

Something that was very interesting about the movie was that the man who made the movie, Orson Welles, lived a very similar life. They both grew up with rough childhoods, and grew up tp become very rich and successfull, but could never find love or friendship and ended up living lonely lives. I think Orson Welles tried to recreate his life through this movie.

Question The Media

I never really put much thought into questioning what I hear or see through the media until this week during class when we talked about not always being able to believe what we learn through the media. We looked at many different questions on media and it got us thinking whether or not to believe what we hear and see.

Most of the time I would never think to question what I see on tv or hear on the radio or read because I am a very believable person, but after this week I am not to sure about anything anymore ! How are we suppose to know when we read a book whether the author is just speaking their own opinion or telling facts !?

Bias opinions happen through all sorts of media, but it happens all the time on television through product placement. Have you ever noticed the weird shots of objects that seem like they don't belong, yaa that's product placement !

Most people don't think to question what they see through the media but it's good too so that you have your own opinion on things and not just someone else's.

March Break

Unfortunately I was unable to do anything exciting or go anywheres exciting over the break, but I was completely fine with just being done with school for a week. I spent my time mostly just hanging out with my friends and having fun .. :) Not that I'm saying that I wouldn't want to go somewheres warm and exciting but were not all that lucky! (Honestly id probably chew my arm off to go somewheres warm right about now ). While all of you were off having a grand old time I was home watching all nine seasons of One Three Hill, can't complain there. So ya that's my March Break !

Does The Media Effect The Fashion Industry?

Think back from year to year.. the media most deffinetly effects the fashion industry. If it didn't fashion would never change. There would never be new styles or trends, always the same things. People see new trends on tv or in magazines, and they want what they see due to who is wearing it. If someone famous is wearing something your bound to want it and think it is the in style.

Fashion has changed dirasticly over the years. Women used to never show their bodys, and now a days women can't get enough. We feel the need to wear less to feel beautiful or "sexy", which doesn't make sense. Marilyn monroe was the biggest sex symbol back in the day, and she didn't feel the need to be super thin or dress a certain way to be beautiful, but now a days we feel that way, and it just doesn't make sense.

The Medium Is The Message

Recently my Media Studies class was divided into groups. Each group had a person they had to research and discuss in a presentation what impact they had on the media.

Each group discussed their person infront of the class in a powerpoint, and even one group presented their presentation as a funeral. No matter how they presented their presentations it tought us about their individual and how they were/are. We saw how each person impacted the media in some way. In the end each person showed us that the media is the message in some way.

What if none of it existed?

Imagine if there was no cable, radio, or news networks and only individuals created content. Without these things most of us would go crazy ! Most of the population lives for the content in the media. Can you just imagine life without Facebook, Twitter, or even Blogger. Where would Mrs. Smith make us write all of our blogs each week?

It's sad that we think that we couldn't possibly live without such things, but people use to all the time. It wasn't long ago that none of these social networks and such even existed. But the truth of the matter is that people now a days depend on the media to get their information from(not that it is always true), and there is no way to stop the media from growing. The world changes day by day and more ideas and creations are made.

How Does Media Effect Your Perception Of Reality

The media effects your perception of reality by momently letting you escape your mind and feel like your somewhere else in that moment. When someone is watching a movie they tend to get into character and their imagination runs wild. You feel like your actually there and can relate to everything going on.

Also, the media effects many people's perception of reality by making people believe they have to be a certain way. People think they have to dress and look a certain way due to the way people look on tv and magazines and such. People think that if your not a certain weight and height that your not beautiful, which isn't true.

House Hippo Evaluation

The house hippo commercial is a great way to show people to not always believe what you see on tv. The media sends you messages of what they want you to believe, rather then what is actually true. We as a society need to learn to analyze what we see or hear over the media more instead of always believing it.
